Like most succulents, the String of Dolphins grows well in well-draining soil. It is often placed i hanging baskets as they can grow well in various locations with indirect light. They can suffer from root rot if over-watered, so be sure to use containers with drainage holes. Select a light, gritty draining soil like a cactus/succulent mix from a local garden center. You can also prevent rot by keeping the plant in a well-ventilated area and let it dry out completely between watering.
The String of Dolphins, scientifically known as Senecio peregrinus, is a delightful trailing succulent that’s reminiscent of leaping dolphins. A close relative to the popular String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) and Senecio articulatus, this plant captivates enthusiasts with its uniquely shaped leaves. The Fresh Greens Co is excited to present this rare gem to its collection, ensuring that each plant is rooted with care.
When it comes to care, the String of Dolphins shares some commonalities with other succulents in the Senecio genus. They thrive when positioned in a south-facing window with bright, indirect light. However, for those without such a window, grow lights serve as an excellent alternative to provide them with the essential lumens they crave. It’s pivotal to ensure the potting soil is porous to prevent water retention. If propagating String of Dolphins through stem cuttings, ensure a proper mix in the soil to facilitate rooting. The plant’s resemblance to its name is even more pronounced when it’s allowed to cascade freely, making hanging baskets an ideal choice.
One of the challenges these succulents face is spider mites. To address this, regular checks are vital, and if detected early, a simple solution of insecticidal soap can often curb the issue. This preventive measure ensures the plant remains as vibrant as the day you brought it home.
While the String of Dolphins is undoubtedly enchanting, it’s worth noting that it can be sensitive to overwatering. Always allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. This method, paired with the aforementioned care tips, will ensure your Senecio peregrinus flourishes, captivating all who lay eyes upon this mesmerizing spectacle of nature.
